GUIDANCE 1 – SELF-ASSESSMENT AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT (SPRING 2022)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to assist students in learning more about personal values, personality, interests, exploration of career choice, and occupational opportunities, through the use of various personal assessment instruments. This course is cross listed as PSYC 5. TRANSFERABILITY: This 3-unit course is degree applicable and transferable to CSU; CSU-GE:E2; GAV-GE: E2.

 

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this course, a student should:

  1. Describe the developmental process of career decision making.
  2. Examine and discuss the role of their self-concept; which includes personal and work-related values, personality interests, and skills; in order to make effective decisions.
  3. Identify, locate, and utilize resources for engaging in career exploration and planning.
  4. Integrate self-assessment results with resources and be able to analyze how internal (gender, ethnic, and cultural background, personal, psychological, etc) and external (work situation, economic factors, etc) factors influence career development.

 

TEXTS, MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY:

  1. Required: The Career Fitness Program, Sukiennik & Raufmann, 11th Edition, Pearson.
  2. Required: Access to a personal computer or laptop.
  3. Required: Access to the internet.

 

FORMAT: This 16-week class is a partly synchronous, online class. We will meet once a week, via zoom, on Wednesday, from 9:45 am to 11:10 am. Your attendance to the zoom meetings is required. The remaining work will be completed online, through iLearn / Canvas. The week’s materials, including video recordings, slideshows, notes, reading materials and assignments, will be posted on iLearn / Canvas every Wednesday after class. Assignments will be due the Tuesday before class, by 11:59 pm.

 

PARTICIPATION: As this is a partly synchronous online class, you will be required to attend weekly zoom meetings. You will also be assessed from your contribution to our discussions, and this will be factored into your grade. If you miss three consecutive weeks of class meetings and work without contacting me, you will be notified to submit a Withdrawal form or risk receiving an F.

Violations such as cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action which may include recommendation for dismissal. GRADING: This course uses a traditional, standard grading system (A-F).  Students also have the option of requesting a Pass or No Pass. Students can select their grading option on their MyGav account. A minimum grade of C (at least 70 points) must be earned to pass the course and to qualify for Priority Registration.

ASSIGNMENTS: All assignments must be submitted online via iLearn. If you are having problems submitting your work via iLearn please email your submission to vparakati@gavilan.edu. Please write “GUID 1 – Your Name” in Subject Line. If you are unable to submit your work on time, you must email me advance, to let me know the reason, and commit to a date that you will complete your assignments.
