ESL Assessment  recommendation

Course Description:

This is the third course in a series of English classes for students with low beginning oral or written English competency. Through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities, students learn to use grammatical structures of English with increasing accuracy while gaining basic life skills.

 

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. Ask and answer questions about issues that affect people's daily lives (for example: family, education, daily activities at home and in the community, finding a job, ailments and injuries).
  2. Skim and scan short readings for specific information within the context of the lifeskills topics covered.
  3. Make affirmative and negative statements and questions, in oral and written form, using the simple present, present continuous and simple past tenses within the context of the lifeskills topics covered.
  4. Apply thematic vocabulary and basic grammatical structures in real world situations

My Schedule:

Students can call my cell number and leave a message. I will call them back and set up an appointment with the student(s). Students may also see me before class starts and at the end of class.

Required text:

STAND OUT, Evidence-Based Learning for College and Career Readiness (Third Edition).

 

                                                                                          

Attendance Policy:  While attendance in this class is not required, your growth and learning is tied to how much time and effort you take in the class.  So, the more you attend the more you will learn.  You will not be dropped from the class regardless of how many days you miss. 

Students Rights and Responsibilities

  • Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Academic Standards Handbook has been designed to help students understand the rules, policies, procedures and information that students find helpful while attending Gavilan College.  Copies of this handbook are available through the Vice-President of Student Services Office, in the college catalog and online at gavilan.edu Students are encouraged to resolve issues informally by talking with college staff members.

    Student behavior standards:                                                                                                           “Students are attending this class are here to learn.  If you are disruptive in any way, you will be asked to leave the class and speak with the Dean before you return.” Students should bring their text book, workbook, notebook, and pencils to class. Students should put their phone on vibrating or turn off cell phones. Students should be willing to participate in classroom discussions.
