For this research paper you will be researching one of the following photographic artists:
Names | Names |
---|---|
Richard Avedon | Ansel Adams |
Kara Walker | Carrie Mae Weems |
Arnold Rafael Minkkinen | Alfred Steiglitz |
Sally Mann | Cindy Sherman |
Henri Cartier-Bresson | Annie Leibovitz |
Dorothea Lange | Robert Frank |
Diane Arbus | Francesca Woodman |
Imogen Cummingham | David LaChapelle |
Edward Weston | Weegee |
I suggest doing a broad google search of each ones artwork to see which one resonates with you. Pick someone whose work you're truly interested in to make it all the easier to write about the work.
Paper Guidelines:
To be formatted in Chicago Manual Style (footnotes and bibliography required). Minimum 5 pages, double spaced 12 points font, times or times new roman font face.
What You Should Write About:
Opening Paragraphs: A short biography of the artist , where were they born? Did they always have an interest in photography? When did they start photography? Other miscellaneous information about the life of the artist that is important. Generally the biography paragraphs should be there to provide insight into the artist that you are researching. Include any information that fits in with a standard biography
Body paragraphs: These should focus on the ideas and descriptions of the artists work (include a couple of images to provide context hence: Chicago Manual Style). Be sure to write about the concepts behind the work, what they (the artist) were/are ultimately known for. These paragraphs should focus on explaining the art of the artists and any major influences they may have had.
Conclusion paragraphs: Should be focused on the main idea behind your paper. Reflecting on what you discovered about the artist and their work (refrain from using sentences that start with I think or I feel). Discuss wether or not the work still holds up in today's society since the world has rapidly changed since photography's invention in the mid 1820s. Summarize the main points in a few sentences.
Bibliography and Foot notes:
CMS (Chicago Manual Style) is the format that all art historian and researchers alike use when writing their papers. It is designed to provide context to what you're discussing within your paper and allows you to easily cite your sources. Please make sure that you familiarize yourself with CMS here: https://writingcenter.uagc.edu/chicago-manual-style Links to an external site.
Your Bibliography should be the last page in your research paper (this does not count as a page number for the actual writing by the way).
Avoid using wikipedia, it's not a viable source for any research since it can be altered by anyone. I once (as a teenager) listed Madonna as a potato because I wanted to prove a point that anyone can alter information on wikipedia. They have since gotten better at correcting information but it Madonna's listing stayed as a potato for a couple of months. You can however locate source in wikipedia since they also use CMS for their information, at the bottom they typically have their footnotes with direct links to each site they used.
Grading:
Formatting/Following Instructions | Thoughtfulness/Details | Clarity/Language Usage | Grammar/Spelling |
---|---|---|---|
25 points: Correct Formatting, Excellent use of footnotes and bibliography. | 25 points: Thoughtful and detailed response about the artist's life. | 25 points: sentences were written clearly and directly. | 25 points: No (or very slight) errors were noticed but didn't hinder the reader's experience (we are human and slight errors happen and that's totally ok). |
20-24 points: Slight Formatting issue: could be the incorrect use of fonts, the wrong font size missed a citation or bibliography isn't laid out correctly. | 20-24 points: The thoughts were present but a bit jumbled, repeated information. | 20-24 points: A bit murky in terms of language. | 20-24 points: A few errors were present. |
11-15 points: formatting issues were present and obvious. | 11-15 points: Information was unclear or presented in a way that wasn't comprehensive or easily understood. Babbling to get through pages (e.g. "It was because they took the path that they wanted to take into the forest along the path that they had chosen to take to get to the destination that they had decided upon"). | Sentences are jumbled and unfocused, filler words are a vast majority of the language: like, therefore, as to, henceforth, etc. these words can be used but should not be abused. If you find yourself using these words often think of a better way to write your thoughts out. | 11-15 points: Many grammatical errors or typos present, may have needed a second pair of eyes to catch any errors. |
6-10 points: major formatting issues were present and painfully distracting to the reader. | 6-10 Points: last minute thoughts about things that didn't enhance the paper's thesis | 6-10 points: last minute writing detecting, not careful and precise enough to be informative to the reader. | 6-10 points: last minute writing, many grammatical errors lots of misspelled words. Clearly didn't proof read |
4-5 points: No formatting was present, or no sources were listed. | 4-5 points: Very limited thoughts of your own were present | 4-5 points: Very unclear language usage lots of run on sentences. | 4-5 points: Lots of grammatical errors, clearly didn't proof read. |
1 point: you turned in something | 1 point: you turned something in | 1 point: you turned something in | 1 point: you turned something in |
