This course is created for instructors new to teaching online, new to teaching online at Gavilan College or for the instructor teaching online but needing a refresher.
Upon completion of this course you will know how to find help (support, tutorials, guides), use tools in the learning management system (iLearn) and the student information system (MyGav) to manage your virtual classroom (including enrollments), build instant communication with students, and learn about some of the biggest barriers to a successful student experience.
- Teacher: Sabrina Lawrence
This course will teach you how to design and teach an effective online course that is anchored in student expectations and learning objectives. Building on a solid understanding of California Community College distance education policies and procedures, you will actively create an effectively designed online learning unit, maximize student success, develop online policies, identify the functions of a course management system, explore dynamic online content options, evaluate online assessments, and successfully apply copyright and fair use practices to digital content. In addition, we will discuss pedagogical concerns in delivery of quality online instruction.
What you will not take away from this class is an understanding of how to use a Course Management System. We'll be focusing on course design and teaching practices and your course management training will occur separately.
This series of lessons is designed to give you guidance and inspiration for using technology in the classroom. Most of the lessons can be accessed from your computer, at work or at home, any time you have a free hour or two.
If you go through at least 12 lessons, plus use the technology for your class, the Staff Development Committee will give you credit for:
- 1 unit for track advancement, or
- 1/2 unit for career increment, or
- 24 hours of flex time.
Be sure to get your approval first with the Staff Development Committee. For details and the paperwork you'll need to fill out for this credit, go to the intranet on MyGav and click on the Faculty Staff Development link.
